Tips & Tricks

Use of brackets within a search request

A search request can consist of up to 4000 characters. To connect search terms you have to use connectors. These connectors are processed in a certain order with a certain priority as displayed beneath.

  1. OR
  2. W/N
  3. PRE/N
  4. W/S
  5. W/P
  6. W/SEG
  7. AND
  8. NOT

The connector priority has an impact on the search request. Use brackets to maintain the original meaning of a search.

Example:
You are looking for documents that cover the topic of no-frills airlines:
The following request:

airline w/25 no frill or low fare or cheap w/5 travel

Is processed in the following manner:
•    Because OR has the highest priority, it operates first and creates a unit of no frill or low fare or cheap.
•    W/5 determines no more than five words should stand between the search terms. The operator ties together the term travel and the previously formed unit of no frill or low fare or cheap.
•    W/25 ties together the term airline and the previously formed unit of no frill or low fare or cheap w/5 travel.

As connectors inside brackets have priority over connectors outside brackets, you can use brackets to get the correct results:

airline w/25 no frill or low fare or (cheap w/5 travel)
